In July 2019, we announced the acquisition of 2GW of greenfield solar projects and world-class talent from Enerlife, a successful independent Latin American renewables developer.

Significant solar portfolio

The acquisition deal includes the transfer of approximately 2GW of greenfield solar projects, at various development stages across Brazil. These sites will go a long way towards cementing Lightsource bp as a major player in the local solar market, and is an important part of our strategy in the region. Our Brazilian strategy focuses on developing fully-funded solar and smart storage solutions for the country’s domestic, commercial and industrial sector, allowing end-users to access their own renewable power supply at a discounted and predictable rate. In parallel to this, the company will also develop a pipeline of greenfield solar projects for local utility customers, and the acquisition of the Enerlife portfolio will play an important part in achieving this.

Impressive talent acquisition

As part of this transaction, some members of the Enerlife team will transition across to Lightsource bp to continue serving the acquired portfolio. Miguel Lobo, formerly CEO of Enerlife and previously General Manager at Martifer Renewables LATAM, joins Lightsource bp alongside other senior executives from the company. Lobo will join Lightsource bp as Director of Business Development. He has over 15 years of renewable energy expertise spanning Portugal, Spain, USA and Latin America, and has worked on the development of almost 5GW of wind and solar projects throughout his career.

Why Brazil?

Brazil is Latin America’s largest consumer market and the country is seeking to further diversify its electricity sources. Its renewable energy production is currently heavily dependent on large hydroelectric projects and solar power is significantly underrepresented. Solar power is flexible and quick to deploy, making it an ideal choice in adding new capacity. We intend to leverage our expertise in financing and full lifecycle services to play a key role in the development of solar power in Brazil.
