The Alabama Municipal Electric Authority (AMEA) is a publicly owned, not-for-profit electric utility, providing low-cost, reliable power to 11 Member municipal utilities across Alabama. In May 2019, AMEA and Lightsource BP announced that they’d signed a 20-year power purchase contract to supply clean, cost-effective, locally-sourced solar energy to AMEA’s 11 Member utilities located across the state.

The agreement is for 100 MW of large-scale offsite solar, providing enough green electricity to power 20,000 homes in Alabama. The solar energy will have a fixed price for 20 years, acting as a hedge against price volatility in the natural gas market. This development will enable the utility to build more stability and diversity in its energy portfolio, while saving a minimum of $40 million over 20 years.

The project will consist of 350,000 solar panels installed across 800 acres of land in Montgomery County. AMEA and Lightsource BP worked closely with the Montgomery County Commission and the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce to bring this project to realization, as part of their efforts to foster innovative projects that drive economic development and tax revenue. The project will be 100% financed, built, maintained and operated by Lightsource BP – construction is expected to be completed in 2021.
